Well good bye to October and thank you for all the wonderful colors and scenes!
This marks about the half way mark on the challenge for the first quarter! I am already starting to get an idea on what lens I am eyeing!
'They' say "glass before body"... I'm here to prove them wrong! Follow me on my year long journey with Nikon's popular Full Frame Body, while I explore the idea of building a glass lineup around the body, piece by piece.

Daily photo and RAW vs JPEG
Hello!
So in my last post I did mention I would be shooting this week in JPEG only. Some of you may be wondering why? RAW is generally the better format to use, so why go back? Even for a week?
Well lets just put it this way. I am challenging myself to make sure my exposure and white balance skills are still up to snuff. Some people say RAW can be a crutch for people who can't do White Balance (WB) or Exposure. To some extent they are right, you COULD use it as a crutch, but most people don't. RAW in general provides more color data, exposure (EV) data, and detail data. Most times RAW files will look sharper and hold more detail, while allowing you much more color control. It allows you to do just about everything you could do with film in processing.
By shooting JPEG though, its more important to get your WB correct when shooting because its much harder to correct in JPEG form through post processing. If you blow your WB under some tungsten lighting (you might notice this under those nice new florescent power saving bulbs that are very popular now), you'll get a heavy yellow tinting/tinge all over the photo... whites look yellow and gross. Bringing that photo back to a proper white value is much harder with JPEG, as the data has already been processed by the camera (hence RAW is a completely un processed data form.... raw data), pushing it to white again will most often lead to bad color shifting and overall just a bad day. This forces me to check my white balance via balance cards and through the use of the image reviewer. It also makes me check for blown highlights which are almost impossible to recover in JPEG files.
I am sure I confused the heck out of anyone reading... so check out Ken Rockwell's explaination here.

Weekly Challenge
For this week I will be shooting only jpeg. Typically I do RAW as it allows me a lot of room for exposure adjustments. Well I am going to shoot jpeg this week because I want to take my time and make sure I am shooting and I am using my settings correctly.
Typically jpeg can be adjusted but not to the extent of what RAW allows.
Should be interesting!

Not a whole lot going on today. I did some work, watched some football, and took a couple photos.
Nice red leaves, love the texture
Camouflaged.

Brandon relaxing between frames.
She could have won 264 bucks if she got a strike, she left one pin up though.

Busy Saturday
Well. Yeah, working all day Saturday.. I am pooped.
The only thing that happened this morning, was getting my van's windshield replaced. I also visited the Johnson County Veteran's Memorial.

Light Box
Just one today, I was trying out my light box kit some more.
These were NOT taken with the D700
but with the Nikkor 50 1.8 D
. I borrowed my Dad's D90
for a couple shots to showcase the D700 in the light box.
A sexy machine it is!

Tuesday comes to close
Hello! Well just two from being out and about. A couple more from the light box kit I purchased. I have never done any product shots or anything like it before. I really enjoyed it and you might have to put up with a few more days of shots from it.

Da Ono Kine!
Just dinner tonight. Lau Lau! Classic Hawaiian dish!
For those of you who don't know what this is; Lau lau, a Hawaiian classic dish. Its meats wrapped in taro leaves, then wrapped again in banana leaves or ti leaves. Then its steamed/slow cooked... put it on a bed of rice, removed the banana leaves and enjoy! The meats fall apart and melt in your mouth, and taro leaves add just a hint of bitterness (depends, think spinach leaves).
This particular one is just pork and a cube of pork fat (us Hawaiians LOVE fat!). While it does not look so appetizing I assure you the flavors are just amazing and its
VERY ONO!
