Daily photo and RAW vs JPEG

Hello!

So in my last post I did mention I would be shooting this week in JPEG only.  Some of you may be wondering why?  RAW is generally the better format to use, so why go back?  Even for a week?

Well lets just put it this way.  I am challenging myself to make sure my exposure and white balance skills are still up to snuff.  Some people say RAW can be a crutch for people who can't do White Balance (WB) or Exposure.  To some extent they are right, you COULD use it as a crutch, but most people don't.  RAW in general provides more color data, exposure (EV) data, and detail data.  Most times RAW files will look sharper and hold more detail, while allowing you much more color control.  It allows you to do just about everything you could do with film in processing.

By shooting JPEG though,  its more important to get your WB correct when shooting because its much harder to correct in JPEG form through post processing.  If you blow your WB under some tungsten lighting (you might notice this under those nice new florescent power saving bulbs that are very popular now), you'll get a heavy yellow tinting/tinge all over the photo... whites look yellow and gross.  Bringing that photo back to a proper white value is much harder with JPEG, as the data has already been processed by the camera (hence RAW is a completely un processed data form.... raw data), pushing it to white again will most often lead to bad color shifting and overall just a bad day.  This forces me to check my white balance via balance cards and through the use of the image reviewer.  It also makes me check for blown highlights which are almost impossible to recover in JPEG files.

I am sure I confused the heck out of anyone reading... so check out Ken Rockwell's explaination here.

Here is today's photo.
